Public lecture

Jointly with MCQMC2014 we are organizing a public lecture on mathematical art work. This public lecture will be given by Jos Leys who is well known for his mathematical illustrations and art. See for example

  1. the movie Dimensions (2008) by Jos Leys, Étienne Ghys and Aurélien Alvarez: nine chapters, two hours of maths, that take you gradually up to the fourth dimension,
  2. the movie Chaos (2013) by Jos Leys, Étienne Ghys and Aurélien Alvarez a film about dynamical systems, the butterfly effect and chaos theory,
  3. and lots of impressive images of fractals, Escher trickeries, circle packings, etc... which can be found on his website

Mathematical Imagery:
A tale about Escher, the fourth dimension and chaos

Computer graphics are a powerful tool to create images and animations that help understand topics that are sometimes quite complex. The best results often stem from the close collaboration between professional mathematicians and computer graphics specialists. In this talk I will show some examples of this: image transformations based on the works of M. C. Escher, visualizations of extra dimensions, 3D fractals, chaos and more.
